District of Columbia: Nonprofit Sample E-mail
To the DC City Council:

Don’t balance the budget by cutting critical services on which people depend for the most basics in their lives. Times are tough, and the needs are growing. Without continued support in these fragile economic times, our neighbors most in need will experience even greater problems.

DC residents depend on the District for help in times of trouble. Our community’s quality of life is as good as the District’s investment in it. By protecting critical human services, you are providing temporary housing for our neighbors, creating skilled workers for employment and making our children’s lives safer.

As you make final decisions on the FY2011 budget, remember that it isn’t a numbers or dollars issue…it’s a human issue. By taking away money from temporary housing programs, you are putting more families on the street. By reducing funding in after-school opportunities, you are pushing our children into harm’s way.

Several Council members have already publicly supported some revenue enhancers. Please consider each option on the table as you discuss how to handle the budget deficit. Instead of making tough choices, make smart ones. The best option is the one that meets the needs of your neighbors, families and friends.

Sincerely,
