To the Prince William County Board of Supervisors:

As the budget process continues in Prince William County, we want to thank you for your past support of your community partners.

We are concerned, however, that your plan to cut nonprofit funding support will have serious consequences for the county. Our country is in the midst of the most sweeping economic downturn in generations. The recession has created hardship for many in our region. In your proposed budgets, you have discussed the possibility of limiting funding to those services and programs that have supported thousands of county residents at this difficult time. The partnerships between Prince William County and nonprofits have been fruitful. Services have been able to reach those who desperately need aid. Services like access to health care, mentoring and emergency shelter and, have given county residents more than just a helping hand; the services give them hope to continue and persevere.

The recommendation to decrease funding cannot come at a worse time. Without continued support in these fragile economic times, our neighbors most in need will experience even greater problems. In most cases, the nonprofit services are the only options available. Nonprofits ensure that residents have a “helping hand” during this economic downtown. By partnering with government agencies, nonprofits form lasting relationship with families, strengthening communities and impacting generations through advocacy. Nonprofits multiply the impact of county funds by leveraging donations from foundations, corporations, and individual donors and then multiply these funds further with volunteers and in-kind donations.

We hope you will consider the benefits, not just the costs, when evaluating the investments your community partners.

Sincerely,
Concerned Nonprofits Serving Prince William County
